Critical Connections Project

print share email

Critical Connections promotes good oral health care by reducing the effects of Gum Disease on women of childbearing age and pregnant women. Gum Disease is the inflammation of the gums. If left untreated, it can lead to inflammation and infection that destroys the tissues that support the teeth, including the gums, the periodontal ligaments, and the tooth sockets.

Signs and Symptoms: (of Gum Disease)

  • Loose teeth
  • Bleeding of the gums
  • Redness or swelling of the gums

Gum Disease is a serious matter, especially among pregnant women because it can:

  • Cause your baby to be born too early (premature)
  • Cause lifelong health problems for your child, if born too early
  • Pass from mother to child

That's why a dental check-up is recommended for women of childbearing age before and during pregnancy.

The program provides:

  • FREE Dental Exam
  • FREE Dental Cleaning
  • FREE Dental Care Education

Women who qualify for services will be referred to one of the designated dental facilities in Orange County. In addition, participants can earn points toward the Healthy Start Mall.

Prevention:

  • Visit a dentist (before and during pregnancy)
  • Floss between each tooth daily
  • Brush at least twice a day
  • Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Drink water and low-fat milk instead of juice and soda
