Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU)

Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU) is an infection of the urethra caused by pathogens (germs) other than gonorrhea. It is generally spread through vaginal, oral, and anal sex.

Signs & Symptoms: begin 1-3 weeks after exposure

  • Most women and some men have no symptoms
  • Clear, yellow or white pus from the penis
  • Discharge or burning of the vagina
  • Burning or pain during urination

Complications & Consequences:

  • Can lead to more serious infection
  • Reproductive organs can be damaged
  • May lead to infertility in men and women
  • Can be spread to other sex partners
  • Infected mother can pass germs to her baby during childbirth
  • Infected baby can develop and eye infection or pneumonia

Prevention:

  • Appropriate use of latex condoms and barriers
  • Limit the number of sex partners
  • Get tested
  • Notify sex partners immediately if infected
