Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU)

Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU) is an infection of the urethra caused by pathogens (germs) other than gonorrhea. It is generally spread through vaginal, oral, and anal sex.
Signs & Symptoms: begin 1-3 weeks after exposure
- Most women and some men have no symptoms
- Clear, yellow or white pus from the penis
- Discharge or burning of the vagina
- Burning or pain during urination
Complications & Consequences:
- Can lead to more serious infection
- Reproductive organs can be damaged
- May lead to infertility in men and women
- Can be spread to other sex partners
- Infected mother can pass germs to her baby during childbirth
- Infected baby can develop and eye infection or pneumonia
Prevention:
- Appropriate use of latex condoms and barriers
- Limit the number of sex partners
- Get tested
- Notify sex partners immediately if infected
