Salmonella

salmonellaSalmonella is a bacterial infection that can cause a diarrheal illness in humans. It is transmitted by eating foods contaminated with feces from an animal or food handler who did not wash his hands properly after using the bathroom.

Salmonella can also be found in the feces of some pets including: turtles, lizards, snakes, chicks, and young birds.

The illness usually runs its course in a few days and does not require treatment. There is a high risk for dehydration. Persons with severe diarrhea may require hospitalization.

Salmonella can cause severe infection in young children, seniors, and people whose immune systems have been comprimised.

Signs & Symptoms: begin 12-72 hours after exposure and lasts for 4-7 days.
