Heart Disease

Heart Disease is a broad term that includes several heart related conditions, such as, angina, coronary heart disease, and heart attacks.

Angina refers to chest pain that can be described as discomfort, heaviness, aching, burning, fullness, squeezing. It is often mistaken for heart burn. It can also be felt in the arms, shoulders, neck, throat, jaw, or back.

Coronary Artery Disease occurs when the arteries become clogged and narrowed restricting blood flow to the heart.

Risk Factors:

• High blood cholesterol levels
• High blood pressure
• Diabetes
• Tobacco use
• Poor diet
• Lack of physical activity
• Obesity
• Alcohol
• Genetic conditions

Signs & Symptoms: Individuals are commonly asymptomatic (without symptoms) however, symptoms can include:

• Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back
• Feeling weak, lightheaded, or faint
• Chest pain or discomfort
• Pain or discomfort in arms or shoulder
• Shortness of breath

Prevention:

• Know your numbers- (Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and Triglycerides)
• Stop smoking
• Get tested for Diabetes
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Limit your alcohol intake
• Find a healthy way to cope with stress
