What is the cervix? The uterus has 2 parts. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus which connects the body of the uterus to the vagina, or birth canal.
What causes Cervical Cancer? Most cases of cervical cancer are caused by a sexually transmitted disease known as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The virus is spread from person to person through genital contact, most often during vaginal and anal sex.
How is it detected? Unfortunately, there are often no signs and symptoms. A regular pap test is the best way to find any changes in the cervix. If an abnormal pap test is confirmed often your doctor will order more tests such as a colposcopy.
Why should I be concerned about cervical cancer? Cervical cancer is very serious. However, it is preventable if you practice safe sex, and get regular screenings.
