Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) refers to two lung diseases: chronic bronchitis and emphysema, that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. Both frequently exist together, so physicians prefer the term (COPD).
Risk Factors:
- Smoking
- Long-term exposure to polluted air
- Poor indoor air quality
- Second hand smoke and occupational dust and chemicals
- History of childhood respiratory infections
- Occupational exposure to industrial pollutants
- Genetic factors
Signs & Symptoms:
- Chronic cough (often with mucus and phlegm)
- Increased mucus
- Frequent clearing of the throat
- Shortness of breath (even at rest)
- Difficulty exhaling
- Unable to perform simple activities
Prevention:
- Stop smoking
- Get an annual flu and pneumonia vaccine
- Avoid smoke, fumes, dust, and air pollution
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Wash hands thoroughly
- See your doctor regularly
- Report any symptoms immediately (especially if chronic smoker)
