Radon

Radon is a odorless, tasteless naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the decay of radium in the soil. Radium is a decay product of uranium, which is present in almost all rocks and soil. Chronic exposure to elevated levels of radon can cause lung cancer.

 

 

Most radon comes into buildings or homes from the soil and rock beneath it. The trapped gas builds up underneath a house and can enter through:

• Cracks in the floors and walls
• Gaps in suspended floors
• Openings around sump pumps and drains
• Cavities in walls
• Joints in construction materials
• Gaps around utility pipes and wires
• Crawl spaces that open directly into a building

There are two basic methods of reducing indoor Radon:

• Sealing cracks and other pathways through which Radon can enter the home.
• Increasing ventilation so that Radon is forced out of the house.

The only way of knowing the concentration of Radon in your home is by testing.
